The World Ice & Snow Sailing Association is an
entity created to organize and promote the sport of
ice/snow sailing. Other important functions include
arranging events and competitions, and serving as
the communications centre for all of the member
nations. Founded in 1987 by representatives of eight
countries, W.I.S.S.A. now has fourteen member
countries with some countries having more than one
association.
Each year, the world championships are held in a
different country. The location is voted upon by the
membership at an annual meeting held during the
championships.
Racing rules used are those adopted by W.I.S.S.A. in
1987, and equipment is divided into the following
categories:
- Open Class: For all equipment using a
freesail, or windsurfer type rig
- Kite Class: For equipment powered by free
flying sails
- Other: For hand-held sails and wings
Races are held in the prevailing conditions at
the site on the date chosen. Racing disciplines
include course races, speed trials, and long
distance marathon. These events take place
regardless of the surface conditions at the race
site.
Over the years, W.I.S.S.A. has served to unite
athletes from all parts of the globe who share the
common interest of winter sailing. Brilliant colors,
high speed action, diverse equipment and worldwide
membership make W.I.S.S.A. events compare favourably
with the Winter Olympics.
Unlike other international championships, the only
requirement to enter is to register. There are no
qualifying entry requirements.
The countries with associations belonging to
W.I.S.S.A. are: Australia, Canada, Estonia, Finland,
Germany, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Russia, Sweden,
Switzerland, Ukraine, U.S.A., & New Zealand
