2005.Mar.03 Newbies - proceed with caution

This talks about

  • Dealing with the unpredictable winds of mother nature deserves more than a visit to the corner store

  • Get the techniques from an experienced professional

The danger for the new kite consumer is that they're still of the mindset that they can just go to the corner store to get one, like they would a bicycle. Without proper training, it is a danger not only to the rider but to everyone and thing around them. The wrong kite in the wrong conditions without the right knowledge can be serious and even cause death.
For that and other reasons, a new kiter should approach the sport with caution and education otherwise the sport can and as we have seen bad publicity. As much care should be taken for power kiting as one would with the sport of parachuting or paragliding. After all would you jump out of a plane without some training? You need to go to a specialty store with qualified sales people that either have experience or can refer you to someone that does.
Much of the safety and skill of piloting a power kite comes down to technique. Now that the sports have been around for a while, it's best to get advise from someone with experience. Something as simple as winding your lines or setting up your kite can be the difference between "I've had the best day in my life" to "I nearly killed myself and want to get rid of all my equipment." Nobody needs to go through that. We need to look after one another as fellow riders to ensure the long term safety and growth of a passion that roots itself deep within our soles is protected.
