Announcing 4th Annual Lake Simcoe Wind
Sports Festival, January 21/22, 2006
Wind Powered,
Passion Fueled TM
Festival for
Winter Kite Sailors
The Annual Lake Simcoe Wind Sports festival was
launched in 2003 with the goal of organizing an
exciting winter wind sailing event on a provincial
level. The event has brought out some of the best
riders throughout Ontario and as far away as Québec.
Visitors from afar are encouraged to stay in local
accommodations so they may enjoy the two days of
riding.
Over the years, different locations were scouted to
try to find the best wind, ice and weather
conditions close to Toronto. We are proud to call
Glenwoods Avenue in Keswick our home of the
festival. The put-in at Glenwoods has become so
popular for winter sailing, its common to find 30-40
riders out enjoying the terrain any time it is windy
in the winter.
Many years before the inaugural event, kite flyers
including single, dual and quad line kiters gathered
every winter to share in their passion of flying
kites. With the growing popularity of winter kite
sailing, it soon became the most predominant at the
event. The single and dual line kites always paint a
beautiful backdrop in the sky for riders and
spectators.
Kite sailing gets it name by using kite power to
sail with. It's very much like sailing a boat where
the rider travels perpendicular to the direction of
the wind. They navigate back and forth across the
snow surface by combining the kite power with the
direction of their skis or snowboard. The kite is
controlled by the rider using a bar or handles that
connect to the kite by usually four lines. With the
right technique, the rider can generate enough power
with the kite to get short jumps, during which they
can perform trick maneuvers.
Finally, it merits noting that this event includes
riders from 10 to 76 years of age. The event serves
as an excellent opportunity to promote the sport and
to watch real passion seekers as they show you how
they enjoy winter in Ontario. The event is held each
year on the southeast shores of Lake Simcoe. The
entire sailable terrain is twenty-two times larger
than the total skiable terrain in Whistler, British
Columbia.

grateful for support from: Canadian Wind Rider,
