Announcing 6th Annual Lake Simcoe Wind Sports Festival, February 16/17, 2008

Smooth Your Ride TM Celebration for Winter Kite Sailors and Outdoor Enthusiasts

About:

The Lake Simcoe Wind Sports Festival is an independent, not-for-profit recreational sport event whose mission is to support and promote the interest and safety of ice and snow sailing.

The Annual Lake Simcoe Wind Sports festival was launched in 2003 with the goal of organizing an exciting winter wind sailing event on a provincial level. The event is a celebration of winter wind sports and brings out some of the most enthusiastic riders throughout Ontario and Eastern Canada.

Over the years, different locations were scouted to try to find the best wind, ice and weather conditions close to Toronto. A little under an hour's drive north from the city lies the 6th largest inland lake in the province. With a total sailable area of 725 square kilometers, approximately twenty-two times larger than the skiable terrain in Whistler, British Columbia, the launch at the foot of Glenwoods Avenue in Keswick has become so popular for winter sailing, it is common to find 30+ riders out enjoying the terrain when it is windy.

Kite sailing gets it name by using kite power to sail with. Internationally it has also been referred to as Kite Snowboarding, Kite Skiing and Snow Kiting. It's very much like sailing a boat or wind surfer where the rider travels perpendicular to the direction of the wind. The rider navigates back and forth across the snow surface by using the kite power as the engine and controls the direction with their skis or snowboard. The kite is controlled by the rider using a bar or handles that connect to the kite by usually four lines. With the right techniques, the rider can generate enough power with the kite to perform short jumps and trick maneuvers.

Finally, it merits noting that this event includes riders from 9 to 77 years of age. The event serves as an excellent opportunity to promote the sport and to watch real passion seekers as they show you how they enjoy winter in Ontario and how you can learn to Smooth Your Ride.TM

The Lake Simcoe Wind Sports Festival is proud and grateful for support from: Canadian Wind Rider, Toronto Kite Flyers, Kitchener Waterloo Wind Climbers, the Georgina Chamber of Commerce, Get Out There Magazine, Visitor Magazine, Mountain Life Magazine, Lures & Tours, Digital Marketing Solutions, Heros Keswick, Ontario Tourism, CBC Radio, Canadian Geographic, Air Vision Adventures, Silent Sports, Board Sports, The A Channel, York Regional News, The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star and many individual donors.
