KiteSled - Kite Sailing Sled The
NEW Peter Lynn KiteSled (Released August 4, 2005) |
| A bit of history...
Back in
November of 2004, Peter wrote about the desire
for a buggy that works well on snow. He talked about
it being able to take a flier plus 100 kgms of food
and equipment - enough to be self sufficient for
about 10 weeks or so. Expeditions in the Artic,
Antarctic, Canada, Alaska or Greenland would be
possible when the wind is favorable. The KiteSled
can also be human-towed when there is no wind. The
Peter Lynn KiteSled Patent was completed August 4,
2005 and should be available in the winter
2005/2006.
To
date, expeditions have been attempted using kites
with skis towing sleds, but this is only about half
as fast, much more physically demanding, more
dangerous and nowhere near the potential range.
Expeditions that trace former historical passages
that took place in the northeast and northwest
around the 18th century could be more easily
replicated. Stringing more than one sled together
could also be possible to allow one rider to sleep
while traveling across the midnight sun. |

Some observations from the design team...
In a test of 27-35 knot
winds and hard ice, it went 80km/hour up wind with a
G1-10, and they didn't dare power it up downwind -
surely a potential top speed near 150km/hr. Nothing
short of terrifying. The steering system is
revealing all sorts of interesting qualities. It
presents the same stability at all speeds, on all
surfaces. Having each ski pinned at four places
means it has absolutely no reactive habits. No
wobbles at speed. Nor is it deflected by rough
surfaces. It just snakes over the top of them as
long as the wavelength is shorter than the ski. Icy
snow, especially when rough is the hardest and most
dangerous to ski, but seems to make little
difference on the sled. They see a superior
technology for lakes with mixed snow/ice.
They say the handling
gets better and better the faster you go - like
being on rails.
